Lets Talk Fabric…
It's certainly bittersweet news that Joann's is closing its box stores. There's a nostalgic charm to wandering through their aisles, and for many, it has been the go-to place for fabric and craft supplies.
While at Bubs Studio we’ve never relied on Joann's for fabric, we know it has been a crucial resource for many, especially since fabric shopping online lacks the tactile experience—feeling the material is so important. Without in-person options, people are left wondering where to turn.
At Bubs Studio, we’ve always prided ourselves on sourcing secondhand materials. Thrift stores offer an incredible variety of textiles, from fabric bundles to repurposed curtains, sheets, and pillowcases. These items can be upcycled and turned into something entirely new. We also shop at deadstock fabric shops for unused textiles from the fashion industry. Deadstock is a fantastic option for larger projects, as it often provides more yardage than thrifted materials. We also feel incredibly fortunate to receive fabric donations from our generous community, and a community based resource is Facebook Market place, there are full fabric collections up for sale at great prices.
Where we have leaned on Joann's, however, is for last-minute notions. When we were caught off guard, Joann’s was often a reliable resource for what we needed in a pinch. But what if we looked more closely at local stores and relied on our community for those moments of urgency? What I hope comes from Joann’s closure is a shift toward shopping small and sustainable. There are so many amazing local shops, independent sellers, and secondhand options to explore. This is a perfect opportunity to slow down, be more intentional with our materials, and support businesses that truly value craftsmanship. Sustainability is about planning ahead and making thoughtful choices that benefit the community and the environment. Here in Oceanside, we are fortunate to have so many resources available to us. Let’s take this change as a chance to support one another and make more mindful decisions that encourage creativity and sustainability in our craft.
